Nature & Purpose of Position Plans, organizes, and directs the day-to-day team operations for the Department of Athletics with the oversight of the Director. Performs highly complex managerial work providing direction and guidance in strategic operations and planning in Sports Operations.
Primary Responsibilities Oversees and directs the daily activities of dedicated sports operations personnel for each sports program on campus. Guides a team of sports operation personnel for each of the athletic programs, including coaches, athletic trainers, and support staff. Supervises equipment managers, travel coordinators, and team sports operations coordinators. Develops and manages inventory systems for equipment and apparel. Coordinates team purchasing through vendors. Collaborates with teams to leverage in-kind contributions and trade, while overseeing and maintaining the associated balances. Works closely with senior leadership to develop processes and practices for the department to reach University strategic goals. Establishes facility improvement plans for potential upgrades. Uses analytics to determine effective methods for process improvement. Manages team competition schedules, directs team travel, and uses Athletic Resource Management Software (ARMS) software to approve team budgets. Establishes processes to ensure National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), Conference USA (CUSA), and University compliance. Works with the Compliance and Academics department to direct and monitor recruiting activities. Promotes departmental awareness through continuing education for coaches and staff. Monitors team travel and works with vendors to procure items for the team(s) as needed. Oversees team purchasing through contracted vendors. Manages team meal budgets with the assistance of Sports Nutrition and Performance. Provides oversight to the respective team coordinator of sports. Supplements activities provided by Sports Ops Coordinators for teams without a dedicated FTE. Coordinates efforts to provide student staffing for team operations. Provides team oversight in the absence of the Athletic Director, as Senior Sports Administrator. Attends meetings as scheduled by National Collegiate Athletics Associate (NCAA), Conference USA (CUSA), and Sam Houston State University (SHSU). May accompany teams on travel dates as needed. Enforces department policies and procedures. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Educational and Experience Requirement
Bachelor's degree in related field. Five years of experience in a related field. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.
Other Specifications
Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws. Ability to manage business functions.
