The mission of Correctional Managed Care is to address the healthcare needs to underserved patient populations within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD).JOB SUMMARY:Provides professional skills in the distribution of drugs and in clinical services offered to patients and staff.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Designs, recommends, monitors, and evaluates patient-specific pharmacotherapy.
  • Provides medication-use education to patients and caregivers.
  • Documents pharmaceutical care activities appropriately.
  • Prepares and dispenses medications using appropriate techniques and follows health system policies and procedures.
  • Assumes responsibility for the heath system's ongoing adherence to its medication-use policies.
  • Understands leadership philosophies that support pharmaceutical care and pharmacy practice excellence.
  • Contributes to the achievement of pharmacy goals through effectively participating in or leading committees and informal work groups.
  • Understands the process of managing the practice area's human resources.
  • Understands steps that must be taken to ensure departmental compliance with accreditation, legal, regulatory, and safety requirements (e.g., JCAHO requirements; ASHP standards, statements and guidelines; state and federal laws regulating pharmacy practice; and OSHA regulations).
  • Participates in the development and implementation of selected pharmacy department's policies and procedures.
  • Manages the use of investigational drug products according to established protocols and the health system setting's policies and procedures.
  • Provides concise, applicable, and timely responses to requests for drug information from health care providers and patients.
  • Writes newsletter articles that provide pertinent medication-use information for health care professionals.
  • Participates in the health system's formulary process.
  • Participates in the medication-use evaluation (MUE) program in a health system.
  • Understands the process for developing or revising policies for assessment, management, prevention, and reporting of adverse drug reactions.
  • Takes personal responsibility for attaining excellence in one's own ability to provide pharmaceutical care and accept responsibility for accurate evaluation of one's own work.
  • Demonstrates ethical conduct in all activities related to pharmacy practice.
  • Communicates clearly when speaking or writing.
  • Works harmoniously with others in the health system.
  • Manages time effectively to fulfill practice responsibilities.
  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure established for department.
  • Performs related duties as required.
EQUIPMENT:Standard pharmaceutical equipment.WORK ENVIRONMENT:May be required to work within the confines of a prison, jail or juvenile detention center. Security clearance is required; pre-employment drug testing is also required.
